Real advantages of learning mindfulness!




I will give practical examples from my own experience so you can understand how these benefits are translated into your life.

I consider that practicing mindfulness sets me one step ahead of the majority of people that surround me. Not because I have acquired superpowers, but because I am more present and focused. I am not constantly occupied with my cellphone, or the news, or even overwhelmed by an event. Because I choose to train my mind and be very aware to what I expose myself to – be it people, environments or events – I know the effect it has on the level of body and mind.

Becoming mindful naturally gets you in contact with a deep understanding of how thoughts, sensations and emotions manifest and operate. It is good to clear out conditioned beliefs which then sets you free from many non-beneficial patterns of behavior and/or biased responses. In a way, you become your own expert!


On the physical level it has made me more aware of the body and sensations. To the point of being able to distinguish a “normal sensation” to a persisting specific sensation on a specific part of the body, which for example enabled me to detect an emergent inflammation in a very early state on a tooth.

When you train the attention, moment to moment, and observe what surrounds you, you learn to embrace and accept each experience, for unpleasant as it might be. You embrace and accept each experience with the understanding that every experience or event is transitory and eventually will pass.

This has helped me to cope and overcome episodes of illness, such as for months having constantly pain all over the body for apparently no reason, an episode of vertigo that completely transformed my reality in a way that every simple daily task was affected, to episodes of very sore throat or simply a headache.

If a state of ill-health prolongs itself for some reason, preventing us to get back with our “normal” life, the inability to mindfully cope might contribute to some additional unpleasant add-ons, like anxiety or depression. This only tends to make the already unpleasant state even worse. In a healthy state, practicing mindfulness in general allows the body to be more relaxed, each meditation provides quality time to release accumulated tensions.


On the mental level, the benefits are a lot. With practice I have developed a quieter mind, not constantly occupied with negative thoughts. I less much less distracted with events about the past or worried with what might or might not happen in the future.

Because the quality of attention is better, I’m able to be more focused on the task at hand, begin and finish faster and more efficiently, without having to go back and correct errors, or wandering from task to task and increasing the sense of overwhelmness.

With some specific practices I’ve noticed also that my levels of happiness, enjoyment and creativity are higher. I’m in general more positive. Off course some negative thoughts arise every now and then. When they do, I’m able to detect them immediately, let go and search for the positive side or learn the lesson to be learned in the situation. I sleep better, and if for some reason I feel a more agitate mind, I practice mindfulness of the breath which immediately helps the thoughts to diminish and the body to relax, naturally inducing me to sleep.


Regarding emotions, I really don’t remember feeling depressed since I’ve started practicing! Some good 8 years have passed.

It has helped me to manage emotions, in a way that I’m able to allow emotions to be present without the need to exteriorize or blame someone else for it.

No, I don´t experience memory problems! =) When I fell angry I´me able to use mindfulness of the breath to calm down, and with years of practice, I´able to let it go, to the point of in the evening I will not be still clinging or propagating the story of what really irritated me in the morning.

Being able to manage emotions has in consequence improved my relationships in general and specially with family. I have become less reactive, less judgmental and more open. Also, as consequence of mindful managing emotions, I am able to make better decisions, letting anger or fear to diminish before saying or doing anything I would later regret.
